When Roman general Maximus is chosen by Emperor Marcus Aurelius to be his heir over his son, Commodus, Commodus orders Maximus' execution. Maximus escapes but his family is murdered. Taken into slavery, Maximus is trained as a gladiator and lives for the day that he may get revenge over Commodus.
