Carry on

the Rise and Fall of Simon Snow

In “Carry On” by Rainbow Rowell, Simon Snow and his gang of misfits race to save the magical world from a monster. As he is believed to be the “Chosen One”, he has to deal with lots of unwanted attention from the higher-ups in the wizarding world on top of his crumbling love life. Then, in addition to the threat of the monster, there’s also the mystery surrounding the death of Simon’s roommate's mother. The book is full of love, action, and mystery and has a Harry-Potter type feel. But as much as this book sounds similar to Harry Potter, it’s actually quite different. It combines vampires, magic-sucking monsters, and nursery-rhyme type spells to create a compelling read. As a kid who loved Harry Potter myself (read the series 6 times through so far :D), this book is a great read if you’re looking for something similar. I really liked how the book changed the perspective in each chapter. This really let me know what was going on with each character and made me feel more “involved” with the book. It also helped add to the suspense and developing mystery. The book is also full of witty conversation and detailed imagery, which allowed for a super captivating and gripping reading experience. Overall, this book was a slow-burn love story that got pushed forward through intense events and the ever-present mystery. So if you’re looking for romance mixed with fantasy then this is a must-read.
