This is the first book by Ann Cleeves that I've read, although I thoroughly enjoy the TV series Vera. I found this book, The Long Call, to be as atmospheric and enjoyable as the Vera series. The main character, Matthew Venn, was raised in a strict religious community, the Barum Brethren, and lost his friends and family when he left the Church. While back for his father's funeral, he is involved in the investigation of a body found on the beach and must again interact with the Brethren as he tries to find the murderer. Many red herrings and clues. Many possibilities. The countryside becomes almost another character. The main characters are interesting and their personalities start to emerge throughout this book. The mystery is interesting and keeps one guessing. I was on the wrong track. LOL I will look for the next book. This was a good start to to a new mystery series with an interesting investigative team.
