Blood Song

a Raven's Shadow Novel
Apr 22, 2019Hillsboro_RobP rated this title 4 out of 5 stars
A solid grim fantasy novel with few surprises, Blood Song is best at the beginning and end, with a bit of a drag after the school segment finishes. While the writing is perfectly fine (I only found one anachronistic phrase, compared to dozens in Geroge R.R. Martin's books) and the plot compelling and fun to follow, please don't jump in expecting something new. It rides the fantasy genre and hero tropes hard throughout, and absolutely does not pass the Bechdel test. Not even close. Despite it's lack of creativity or pushing boundaries, it's an enjoyable fantasy for those who would just like to see a stoic butt-kicker trying to do right in a dark world with his band of battle-school brothers. It does that one thing well.
