This is the first of the series I've read, which tempers my reaction. While I liked both Sarah and Malloy, their characters didn't seem very real. Perhaps they would if I'd read all the prior books. I always prefer to read series in order, but just picked this one up when the bookmobile brought it. The plot seemed highly contrived, very hard to follow, consisting mostly of visits to various people. In retrospect, there was lots of action, but in the reading it was confusing. The ending was sappy and it seemed ridiculous that Sarah didn't see it coming. One reason I picked it up was her career as a midwife, but that didn't have anything at all to do with the plot. Thompson's a good writer, so I may try the first in the series and see if I like that.
