the Ironies of Household Technology From the Open Hearth to the Microwave

A bit dated (written in the early 1980s) in its descriptions of "modern" housework and its assumption that women's rights was a lost cause, but a truly fascinating look at the rising tide of housework since colonial days. It puts the constant burden of housework in historical perspective. It is certainly true that, with all the benefits technology brings, it also leads to increased expectations - as more can be done, more must be done. However, I can only assume that some of the author's suggestions for housework reduction (stop brushing your teeth? seriously?) are not intended to be taken seriously.
