I read coraline a few weeks ago, and here's my opinion on it. First of all, if you haven't seen the movie, I'd recommend watching it after you read the book. I saw the movie first and honestly, for me personally it made it almost difficult to get into, because everything was drastically different from what I had grown up with, even though roughly half the dialogue is exactly the same. Anyways, in terms of the book, if you like the idea of spooky button-eyed people and really creepy rats, this is the book for you. The reading level isn't too difficult, and the book itself took a total of roughly a day to read for me. The characters are all really fascinating, as are their alternate personalities. They're also all very different from each other, making their conversations almost refreshing throughout. However, something I found interesting is that there were characters and concepts in the 2009 movie that never existed in the book, and everything from main plot points to the ending were dramatically different. This is good though, because it made the book stand out more, as a different experience in itself. The concepts here are all fascinating, and mainly revolve around Coraline learning that the grass isn't always greener on the other side, so to speak. Generally, I thought this book was a really good read, though. It's a smooth read with well made characters and a steady plotline. It's a very good book to sit and read with a nice coffee and some spooky ambient music. It was never boring, and I would highly recommend it. And if you enjoy it, I'd also recommend the movie since it's awesome too and it's been one of my favorite movies since I was a kid. Have fun with your reading, and I hope you enjoy this novel too! -@WoodsReadingAndJoy of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library Coraline is a short disturbing story about young, witty, imaginative and clever Coraline Jones whose story begins with a little door. The book is filled with both creepy and outstanding characters that come into Coraline’s life. For a child reading this it is a wondrous book of the perfect life that can be given to a child. For a parent it is not as wondrous but frightening. Coraline is written in a way that both children and parents see such differences. The book has blooming flowers and bright lights hiding parent neglect and out right horror. Coraline will have shivers running down your spine and give new perspective of black buttons and cats. - @LittleMissRedHead of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library
