Cet obscur objet du désir (English: That Obscure Object of Desire) is a 1977 black comedy directed by Luis Buñuel. This film turned out to be his final film. Set in Spain and France against the backdrop of a terrorist insurgency, the film tells the story of an aging Frenchman who falls in love with a young woman who repeatedly frustrates his romantic and sexual desires. A dysfunctional and sometimes violent romance between Mathieu (played by Fernando Rey), a middle-aged, wealthy Frenchman, and a young, impoverished and beautiful flamenco dancer from Seville, Conchita, played by Carole Bouquet and Angela Molina. The two actresses each appear unpredictably in separate scenes, and differ not only physically, but temperamentally as well. I couldn't tell which one was which until almost the end of the film. Yet, it didn't confuse me at all. Although two actresses played the heroine, she constantly seemed to be a good-for-nothing girl for the wealthy Frenchman. He should've realized it in the first place. However, he couldn't. Why? It is because the film is one of the darkest comedies ever made.
