Technology is not neutral, or even always positive in its subtle effects on society. Far beyond the pervasive "digital divide," the authors here try to understand technologies as prime elements of our personal and social identities, as well as often more deeply embedded in economic and societal divisions. They raise scholarly challenges to thoughts that technology can solve all problems, the place of surveillance technologies, potential gender bias inherent in a technological world, among others.
