This is New York City around 1959-1960, before the world changed. Dave Mitchell is an 8th grader with a bicycle and a great subway system. He can travel to Coney Island or the Bronx with almost no trepidation. He has a contentious relationship with his grumpy lawyer father (who later turns out to be a lot more caring than he lets on). He is good friends with Kate next door, whom people call the “crazy old cat lady”. After an argument with his father, Dave adopts one of Kate’s tom cats and his life is changed. The cat becomes simply “Cat.” Through Cat, Dave becomes friends with college drop-out and trouble-maker Tom and meets his first girl-friend, Mary. The story kind of meanders around pleasantly with a minimal plot, but enjoyable still.
