Ruthie Midona has worked the front desk at Providence Retirement Villa for years. She has her routine, and not much ever changes. Until she lays eyes on Teddy Prescott, the son of Providence's new owner and her new neighbor. Tall, tattooed, and with the most magical hair on Earth, Teddy's in town saving up money to pursue his dream of opening a tattoo shop. Ruthie's dazzled at first sight -- until he mistakes her for a little old lady. Luckily, Ruthie has the perfect revenge for Teddy's insulting first impression. Her most eccentric residents have just placed (yet another!) ad seeking a personal assistant to torment. Ruthie knows a quitter when she sees one and is more than happy to offer up Teddy. To Ruthie's surprise, Teddy proves to be the ultimate hire, charming his way through the entire villa and into her heart with his joyful, never-serious outlook on life. But with the future of Providence hanging in the balance, and Teddy's family's plans threatening to shatter Ruthie's safe little universe, will Teddy be there when it really counts? -- Adapted from cover

The cover blurb calls Second First Impressions a "cozy" read and I couldn't agree more. This was a low-angst contemporary romance set in a retirement community. Ruthie is 25 going on 95. She's aware that she's stuck in a rut but is committed to her life at the retirement community. However, when a hot tattooed dude disrupts her peace, Ruthie finds herself coming out of her shell with the help of her new friend, Mel, and two 90-something retirees. Absolutely adorable!

I was in need of a genre switch and this was the prefect "beach read" getaway!
I do agree with the reviewer below who mentioned that at times it was difficult to tell who was speaking. Would make a great movie.

Well the Parloni "sisters" are the highlight of this story. Page 75 had a lol moment but not much of a romance. I wasn't impressed and the ending was predictable. But if you're looking for a feel good story it'll meet your expectations.

A New & Noteworthy Fiction staff pick. First impressions stick. So what happens when the hot guy on the motorcycle who doesn’t have enough money to pay for his gas insults the young woman dressed in thrift store clothing who covers for him turns out to be his new boss? Read this and find out as it’s both sweet and funny.

So incredibly lovely and heartwarming!

I really loved the characters, and the romance is natural and genuine. Teddy is like a human Labrador and Ruthie is really just figuring out who she is. Together they're perfectly balanced.
I also can't give a review without mentioning the Parloni's. OHHHH the Parloni's. They made the story for me to be honest. What's a 90 year old bad ass with an endless amount of money to do? Whatever she wants - and they're brilliant.

I will say though, it was a tad slow to start and some of the wording and sentences were confusing. Sometimes I didn't know who was speaking or who they were speaking too. It also felt a bit like they author was going for something, or re-wrote a comment and didn't add in enough background information. Everything could be fixed easily with some more editing, and I will note that I was reading an ARC so hopefully those kinks will be worked out before release.

I did think the ending was a tad rushed, especially in regards to Teddy and his family drama. I almost hoped that this particular storyline wrap up was given it's own scene and not combined with another - but it didn't detract enough from the ending to really matter.

All in all I really enjoyed it. Thorne's first novel, The Hating Game was an instant winner and I can see her storytelling coming back out in this one.
