"Imagine an America very similar to our own. It's got homework, best friends, and pistachio ice cream. There are some differences. This America has been shaped dramatically by the magic, monsters, knowledge, and legends of its peoples, those Indigenous and those not. Some of these forces are charmingly everyday, like the ability to make an orb of light appear or travel across the world through rings of fungi. But other forces are less charming and should never see the light of day. Seventeen-year-old Elatsoe (“Ellie” for short) lives in this slightly stranger America. She can raise the ghosts of dead animals, a skill passed down through generations of her Lipan Apache family. Her beloved cousin has just been murdered, in a town that wants no prying eyes. But she is going to do more than pry. The picture-perfect façade of Willowbee masks gruesome secrets, and she will rely on her wits, skills, and friends to tear off the mask and protect her family" -- Publisher description.

Good young adult book in what I think of as "real world" fantasy - for a value of real world that includes magic, ghosts, and a variety of vampire... It's real world enough for the author to include the everyday racism that the protagonist deals with as she goes about her life, and fantasy in the best way for teen readers; yes, there are monsters, but the monsters can be vanquished. I'm not the target audience for this book, but I enjoyed it, and look forward with pleasure to Ms. Little Badger's next book. In deference to the 43 people waiting for it, I also read it fast and will return it today!

This was a really great book that I liked a lot! The world building was also good, which is sometimes tricky with "our exact same reality but plus magic has always existed" because that always raises questions of "well why didn't we use magic to [solve problem]." If the Indigenous peoples had magic, why didn't they just kill the invading colonizers? Well, unfortunately, the white people also had magic, and I personally felt this book balanced that well.

There were also lots and lots of dogs! <3

Little Badger manages to wrap up a mystery, some fantasy, and a lot of adventure into a compelling YA novel. It's a perfect blend of myth and mayhem, with a side of dog.

Ellie can bring ghosts to life. But not human ghosts. Everyone knows that's not a good idea. When her cousin is murdered, Ellie, with the help of her friends, family, and ghost dog work together to put things right. And put her cousin back where he now belongs.
