It's 1968 in America. Change is blowing in the wind, but seemingly far removed from the unrest in the cities is the small town of Mill Valley where for generations, the shadow of the Bellows family has loomed large. It is in their mansion on the edge of town that Sarah, a young girl with horrible secrets, turned her tortured life into a series of scary stories, written in a book that has transcended time.

Thriller/mild horror good for teens even tweens. Entertaining enough for older if nothing better to do.

The movie is geared to the same age the book series is which is probably 9-12 years old. I thought it did a good job of calling out some of the stories from the books. If you are an adult watching this, you won't be scared probably, but that isn't the point. It is a good concept and the actors all pull it together. The director does a good job of giving the kids real consequences for their actions.

After watching this (1hr 47min) DVD movie, with a surprisingly catchy movie name: "SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK".
It seemed "in my opinion", it is more ORIENTED toured a teenage audience. Parts of this movie, switching between reality and fantasy, where things happening that might be more interesting to a teenager.

As a adult - this movie seemed nonsense. Insane Asylum pops up from nowhere, A old fashioned book creates stories (that apparently come to life).
The creative title character (STELLA), keeps making NEW STORIES UP throughout the entire movie.
When the movie ends, started showing actors / actresses - I DID NOT KNOW ANY OF THEM.
That the conclusion of DVD movie ending, where it showing people working on this movie, "IT SHOWS IN ALL RED PRINT", AS IF for supposedly scary factor, I did not really think it was necessary.

Overall: THIS 2019 DVD MOVIE, rated: PG-13; "IS NOT SCARY AT ALL"

I wanted to like this movie more than I did! It was well-made, but I felt it lacked the scare factor of the books. Perhaps because I read the books as a kid and watched the movie as an adult, but I'd hoped for more out of it.

A little juvenile maybe but I still was entertained from it. Would have been great to have watched during October 31. If you enjoy things like Tales from the crypt then you would enjoy this movie. Worth a watch.

Wow! I was shocked at how much I really enjoyed this movie. Great special effects. And I really liked the actors. Good performances all. Definitely not for children.

Guillermo Del Toro and his crew definitely pay homage to the 1960's setting the film is set in. It was an enjoyable film to experience. The acting was very well cast, offering good story lines and moments of suspense at times where we, the audience, definitely felt for the characters' lives as their *spoiler alert* respective dooms seemed at-hand. The film moved from one set of circumstances to creating, exploring and resolving an entire story within the Scary Stories world all while blending good special effects with attentive film making. I honestly thought this would be a cheesy film adaptation of Alan Schwartz's tales, but I was happily intrigued by it! Well done--this film made me truly appreciate stories "that much more" or "all over again". I'll definitely consider adding this movie, and its book title, to my shelf if and when :).

Ok movie, some parts will make you jump. It was nice to see parts of Hamilton in it.
