Wow. What an truly enjoyable read. I haven’t had so much fun reading a book in a long time. I found this book listed on one of the recent WCLS library book lists and gave it a try. I think it was the Joss Whedon comment by a previous reader that did it. Yes, I am a geek who loves Firefly and the original Star Wars. I have watched Star Trek for some 55 years and love the “new” Battlestar Galactica. I was hooked by the 5th page. Reading it reminded me of how I felt when I saw the original Star Wars movie in the late ‘70’s. Warning: it is very militaristic—it is a war story after all— but it works well here. What do they say in the ratings? Warning: contains scenes of Sci-fi violence? Great plot, characters and setting. The author does an incredible job of describing a whole galaxy and its mechanics without long boring descriptive passages to slow down the fast pace of the narrative. I am hoping he will write a sequel as long as it doesn’t detract from the strength and beauty of this special book. But whatever he writes next, sign me up.

If you ever wondered if Joss Whedon could write a sci-fi novel, this is for you. In a universe wracked by an event that eliminated technology from entire worlds, a handful of people race to prevent another from happening. Filled with action, snark, and fun.
