More artsy than I expected, with the focus being on displaying scenes to convey feelings rather than progress a story.

Horrible, miserable movie. Sound level alternated between blaring loud and so low that the dialogue was unintelligible. Had to turn on closed captioning to figure out what they were saying. Out of 89-minutes running length it was more than 35 minutes before anything happened and after that it was a lot of blood and gore. It was a complete waste of time.

A damaged man freelances hurting bad men who hurt young girls. Sort of like The Equalizer in terms of premise, but without a ton of plot. This is a strip downed experience. All the fat has been trimmed. Joe (Joaquin Phoenix), had a bad childhood, we don't know quite how bad, he endured great trauma as an adult in law enforcement/armed services, we don't know quite how horrific it was. The movie is very violent, he likes to use a hammer, but a good amount of the violence isn't show, we see the bodies on the ground, but not how they got there. The movie is only 90 min, so while it is light on exposition, it is more about the universal nature of trauma and pain, and the evil that causes it, and the anger that it provokes. This one just hurtles forward and is an intense experience that doesn't feel like it's missing anything while telling you so little.

If you like Joaquin Phoenix and you like violence in film, you'll like this movie. Joaquin Phoenix bludgeons people with a ball-peen hammer. Based on a Jonathan Ames novel and directed by Lynne Ramsay, YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE has some avant-garde bona fides. It's an intellectual tough-guy drama. It's nice to see Joaquin Phoenix play a tough guy. I enjoyed it. Oh, also, I liked the Jonny Greenwood soundtrack so much I purchased a copy of it.

not my cup of tea. more wallowing in the failure of men's heroic narrative. with no alternatives in sight in the usa. just endless violence mass murder killing. it's a man's world. yes it is

Not much dialogue. A well done psychological thriller. The movie scenes jump from childhood to military and present day trauma with no end to the suffering of the "hired victim."

i found it to be a man's personal struggle with his own Yin & Yang so to speak. Not what i was expecting but i watched it none the less.

I LOVED it! What all the one-starrers say about this film is the exact opposite!

This was one of the worst movies ever! It was not only ridiculous but gross as well. I watched because I had nothing else.
