The second and third books in the trilogy, "Grant Comes East" and "Never Call Retreat," continue the alternative history started by these authors in their treatment of the battle of Gettysburg. After one single but momentous change of decision on the second day of the battle, this narrative continues with how the Civil War might have driven forward under altered circumstances. The main factors are still present - manpower, railroads, Northern industrial might - and the characters are all true to their nature, Grant and Lee, Lincoln, Dan Sickles and George Pickett. The result is a very interesting play on history, but history with the very real suspense of not knowing the outcome.
