Bedford combines the rough-edged, handmade ethos of a Boy Scout manual with a sly sense of humor that kids love, wielding an X-ACTO knife, magic marker, and prodigious imagination to create endlessly delightful projects for his two sons. He knows that kids like contraptions and gadgets, things that are surprising (a chair that appears to be balanced on eggshells) or complex (a multilevel city, with buildings, tunnels, and roads, built from old boxes around the legs of a table). The projects are shown in full-color photographs, and the instructions are illustrated in detailed line drawings. Some are quick and simple, some are more of an afternoon project—yielding hours and hours of rich, imaginative playtime.

This is the kind of book I wish my parents could have brought home when I was growing up. It takes the average craft project book and steps it up a notch. Best of all is the reuse of ordinary household materials for the most part.

Great book for a rainy day. You're going to need some pretty mad drawing skills, but there are templates at the back of the book. I think the Table Leg Garage was my favourite design, but there are some pretty neat ideas here.

Lots of fun stuff, different levels of difficulty-small investment in some tools and supplies, but worth it for the fun with your kid
