This film, whose title means "puzzle" or "riddle", is a fairy tale of supernatural romantic love.
A young woman (Rani Mukherji) marries into a wealthy family of traders and commercial businessmen. But the husband (Shah Rukh Khan) does not pay much attention to her, and spends his time preparing accounts and getting ready for his impending multi-year trip away from home. One of the reasons the family is wealthy is their unfailing resolution to follow what the astrologers say when it is the most auspicious time to do business. Now was the auspicious time, so the husband leaves his newlywed bride. But a ghost, who has seen the wedding party pass by one day as well as the husband traveling alone soon after, who was attracted to the newlywed bride, who has some amazing supernatural powers at his command, decides to take on the husband's appearance and goes to try his chance with the bride.
From this premise, the film develops the toward the posing of the question, "Who is the real husband?" While this is the nominal puzzle or riddle, some viewers may be left with the nagging question, "Why did they end the film this way?" This becomes the real puzzle. One suspects that the film's screenplay was drastically changed from its literary source. (No details will be given, for the film is worth watching.)
It is a beautiful film to the eye. The production design and art direction are superb. The music is wonderful, evoking the Rajasthani locales and fairy tale aspects of the production. The costumes are colorful. The CGI special effects are quite good. Some sync sound is used, instead of the whole film being dubbed in post-production. The acting is of a high caliber all around, from the veteran character actors A. K. Hangal and Anupam Kher to Rajpal Yadav and Juhi Chawla. The leads are fine, with Shah Rukh using more restraint than one normally finds in his films, and Rani in one of her more tearful roles. She seems to get slightly out of step in some of the dances, but looks terrific. And, of course, there is Amitabh Bachchan - in his scene-chewing Kirk Douglas mode - in a cameo as the lone shepherd who, with peasant common sense, is able to solve the nominal puzzle.
Another puzzle associated with this film is how it became India's entry into the Best Foreign Film category for the Oscar award. There were several much better films than this, such as "Black", which were completely passed over. Additionally, the DVD is a bit flawed in that there is a long stretch in the film where the sound and the visuals are not in synchronization.
Despite these issues and possible irritations, I have enjoyed watching this film several times. It is in Hindi, with English subtitles.

This story is so much about the choices that we make and the ones we don't get to. The choice of Kishan to leave his new bride, Kishan's father to accept an imposter, and Lachchi to fall in love with her ghost. It was a beautiful love story.

One of my favourite movies! It's like a beautiful fairy tale. The costumes and songs are fantastic.
