Brilliant story of a young boy's determination and perseverence while confined in a 'baby house' in Russia labeled as an 'incurable'. Most children in his situation never learned to talk or walk and many died at a very young age after being sentenced to bed care. Vanya's indomnible spirit touched the hearts of a few charity workers, and with their help was eventually adopted at age 9. A critical and heart wrenching story of modern Russia's child care system.

Heart-rending. Very eye-opening and a book I read in small doses, interspersing it with something much lighter, because the story, although ultimately positive for the writer, featured such sad and desperate characters, many of them abandoned to terrible fates. This true story highlights the strength of the human spirit.

Very depressing and uplifting at the same time. I couldn't think too much about the fact that children continue to be treated so horribly all over the world. I am glad that John/Vanya shared his story.

An incredibly detailed, honest and truthful account of a fight by many good people to save just one little boy from the crumbling post-soviet orphanage system.
As a person who was born and grew up in the Soviet Union, I can say that everything in this book is true. The storytelling quality of the narrative is outstanding.

I highly recommend this book.
