I hope that anyone new to PD James will not judge her by these truly terrible audiobooks - James did not get the title ‘Queen of Crime’ by boring her readers to death. Somehow Ms. Dellaportia does.

Ms. Deleportia has a beautiful lilting voice that lulls my mind into a deep sleep every time I try to listen to PD James’ gripping tales of murder.

I love PD James’ books and have come back to the audiobooks several times in hopes I misjudged her but Penelope Dellaporta's reading has no connection to the content of the material and cannot think of another instance of a reader so thoroughly destroying the material.

Descriptions sound like an adolescent girl reading from a poetry book she does not have the depth to understand, emphasis in all the wrong places, characterizations are one dimensional with no variation for each character and acting is non-existent. The effect is monotonous and dull, like reading a technical manual which is the opposite of PD James’ writing. I cannot get past the first few chapters and have to rewind time and again to get that far.

The only books Penelope Della Portia should be reading are children’s books to overactive youngsters who need to fall into a deep sleep.

I am hoping PD James’ brilliant novels will be re-recorded using a superior voice to match the materials.
