A brilliant book on health and healthy food options. If you do not have time to read the entire 400+ pages, just go to the chapters on diseases that concern you. I started that way and then got hooked on reading all of it from start to finish. I will be buying this so I can refer to it often and lend it to my friends.

There is so much research and also so much 'bad' research out there (ie. industry funded) that it is nice to have someone go through it all and then explain it in layman's terms. Dr Gregor explains in detail what has been known since the days of Hippocrates (let thy food be thy medicine). This book makes it pretty clear why our moms are always preaching to 'eat your veggies!'.

Dr Gregor's website, nutritionfacts.org is also highly helpful and motivational in choosing the right foods.

FABULOUS BOOK!

Although it does contain an at times overwhelming amount of well-substantiated research, it is so well organized and indexed, that it is also very easy to go right to the parts that are of greatest interest to you. Plus it is very well written with the information woven nicely into engaging stories that at times made me laugh out loud. Part one contains 15 separate chapters, addressing in depth all that is known about prevention or reversal of each to 15 leading causes of death. Part 2 two goes into detail about herbs, spices, and specific foods that are especially beneficial to eat, how to prepare them and what else you might want to know about them.

A huge bible with far too much details and theories. I skipped few chapters from some diseases. I preferred the chapters from the second parts with different foods and herbs and spices. I brought it back sooner with almost 100 persons waiting for it!

My major eye opening learning from this book is that "old age" diseases like clogged arteries can actually be reversed with a change in diet. It is the typical western diet of meats, dairy, cheese, eggs that irritate the endothelial cells lining all arteries. With each meal.
they get inflamed, and scar over...until your pipes are clogged (reduced in size). When you have reduced blood flow to each area of the body, you get symptoms there.

I continued to learn about this common condition by watching YouTube videos; the movie Forks over Knives, talks by Dr McDougal and other plant based diet doctors. I suspect my Disc Degeneration Disease (DDD) is not from bad lifting, but from reduced blood flow in the lumbar arteries alongside my spine.

Can this book motivate me to reverse direction from declining to improving health? Can I drop my Total Cholesterol and LDL and CRP to a high performance level to actually start to reverse my condition? In the words of Pierre Trudeau, "Just Watch Me".

I highly recommend this book to learn about what YOU might die from, so you can change your diet now to stop and reverse your body's decline. A healthy, active old age (70's, 80's, 90's) is much preferred to the 'give up and wait to die in your rocking chair".

Dr. Michael Greger promotes a whole food, plant based diet for health using humor and study based data. He tells stories and makes gentle suggestions about how to incorporate his daily dozen healthy foods into your diet including recipes. Each chapter begins with "How Not to Die from _______" Refreshing to have a doctor promote health through diet instead of prescriptions.

How Not to Die thoroughly addresses the chronic and deadly diseases suffered by so many Americans due to our Standard American Diet. Dr. Greger recommends a plant-based diet and explains in detail the benefits of eating this way. I also like that he emphasizes the need for daily exercise. This is a complete lifestyle plan, not a diet.

Superb, well researched book. In fact, probably the most thorough and timely book on food and nutrition I have ever read.

For those who have not had a chance to see the book, here is the author's (Dr.Michael Grerger) website. I can't praise this book enough.

I didn't have the time to finish the book, but I will buy it. I learned a lot in the few chapters I read, and I am convinced that what we eat has a major impact on our health.
