I really liked the way the story and the years unfolded and I will never complain again about how hard I have to work, Patty was a trouper! I would have liked to learn more about the Casey character but I think the author did that deliberately. I think his quiet retreating nature was partially his own personality and partly the circumstance of having a father in jail so long. Sometimes mums never find out everything about the lives of their grown sons even though they want to. I'm glad for the major things in his life that did go well for him though, like a mum would be. The author left me feeling like such mums, and like Patty when it came to Casey. Really enjoyed this one, was a page turner for me, Stewart O'Nan's one of my favourite authors.

When I first started reading this I was enjoying the flow of the way the author was telling the story. However when throughout the whole book it was She this, and Patty that it just left me lacking feeling. Where was the dialogue we lived only in her movements and thoughts. The truth is this book hit very close to home I having been able to experience the way the system works first hand and understand that it's is the families who suffer most on both sides. This book just lacked the true feelings I had hoped to experience. By the end even I was ready for Patty to give up on her husband. And why would she keep wondering what was wrong with her son why he was so introverted she was determined to make a life who was facing a 25 year to life sentence for murder did she not think that would have an impact on her son. The fact that the author didn't play more on Casey's character and the choices his mother made affecting his life takes away from the fact that he was writing a book about families who have to deal with loved ones going to jail and going through the system.
