I really liked the way the story and the years unfolded and I will never complain again about how hard I have to work, Patty was a trouper! I would have liked to learn more about the Casey character but I think the author did that deliberately. The fact that the author didn't play more on Casey's character and the choices his mother made affecting his life takes away from the fact that he was writing a book about families who have to deal with loved ones going to jail and going through the system.
I came across this novel by accident, picked it up, and plunged into a life and circumstances that I would not ordinarily find interesting. O'Nan creates fully rounded characters whose lives are not dramatic or unusual. They are all
