Alanna now finnished her knight training has now left Tortall kingdom to go out on her own with her servant Coram, her cat Faithful and her magical sword Lightning down to the south. They are on route when they encounter a Bazhir tribe called the Bloody Hawk and in order to be accepted amongst the Bazhir she and Coram had to become one of their own. Even after becoming one of their own the shaman (leader) of the tribe was still convinced that she was evil and decides to kill her. While trying to kill her with a magic spell he used all of his energy and he killed his own self. Alana being the responsible for 'killing' him has to become shaman (the first girl shaman) and train other shaman so she can continue her journey through the desert. She decides to train three members of the tribe who have the gift to become a shaman and use their powers (which two of them were girls). After training the three Bazhir to use their magic properly the only boy who was going to enroll himself as a shaman dies also draining his magic and the two women are left alone to become shaman. After Alanna enrolls the two girls as shamans she continues her route to explore the rest of the desert.

""You are a terrifying creature," the Voice said solemnly. "You do not take place in your father's tent, letting men make your decisions. You ride as a man, you fight as a man, and you think as a man-"
"I think as a human being," she retorted hotly. "Men don't think any differently than woman - they just make more noise about being able to."" - The Woman Who Rides Like a Man
