Vito sets himself the impossible task of impressing Maddalena, even when WW II begins. He is socially beneath her, and everyone in their village knows it. When her family flees the town, he must stay to take care of his mother, and he takes care of her family home too, so far as he's able. But he can't win Maddalena. Sweet, sad story of life in rural Italy in the 1930s and the war years.
