"Very well then, the church I mentioned will be established, but its foundation, in order to be truly solid, will be dug in flesh, its wall made from the cement of renunciation, tears, agony, anguish, every conceivable form of death.”-God
Possibly the masterpiece by Portuguese Nobel laureate Jose Saramago ("Blindness," "Baltasar & Blimunda"). Saramago, like Nikos Kazantzakis before him, re-imagines the life of Christ, focusing on his humanity. This was less controversial, perhaps because evangelicals don't read international fiction and it wasn't made into a movie, although it did cause a stir in Saramago's native Portugal and he left for Spain shortly afterwards. Saramago called himself an atheist, but he shows a profound understanding of spirituality. While the novel includes canonical stories like the temptation in the wilderness and the wedding of Cana, Saramgo also invents and, as in "Last Temptation of Christ," is interested in Christ's humanity, which includes a relationship with Mary Magadalen. It's not necessary to have a background in Christianity, but it helps, especially if you've struggled with the Church. God does not come very favorably. For those open to a different take on an iconic and divisive character, Saramago's novel is deep, insightful, and very human. "One has to be God to countenance so much blood."
