I would like to 5-star this book if for nothing else than the great detail it gives to the lives of the emperors in late 19th century Japan, but it reads more like a reference book for a more summarized version. I learned a lot about the Meiji Restoration and was able to understand why Japan's encounter with the West turned out so different than China's. After the Restoration, I'd learned enough and with regrets stopped reading.
