This semi-autobiographical (like quite a bit of his work) novel is based on his experiences working on the script for "Barfly," which starred Mickey Rourke as a Bukowski-esque drinker/writer. There's a certain meta-ness to it that is different than much of his work, but it will really only appeal to the die hard Bukowski fan.
This is my least favorite Bukowski novel. We get it. You write a screenplay. Movie's on. Movie's off. Movie's back on. Everybody drinks. I think the rest of the Chinaski books had more substance and better story lines.
Great book!!! Gives the trials and tribulations of getting a screenplay produced in Hollywood. Not his greatest novel, but pretty good!
