Beryl is a willful girl, brash and headstrong. And it is young Beryl Markham to whom the reader is first introduced, although intercalary chapters give brief glimpses of her adult days as an aviatrix.

Growing up in the part of Africa that is now Kenya, Beryl learns warrior skills from the Nandi tribesmen who are her neighbors. Experiences she has with the indigenous Africans include wrestling, lion hunting, and jumping as high as her head.

Beryl values the freedom, bravery, and strength she develops while working with the Nandi; her father, however, is concerned that she will be ostracized from proper British society. His solution is to send her to a boarding school in Nairobi, where Beryl learns that girls, like lions, are dangerous creatures. She stays at the institution for a year before declaring her independence in a spectacular fashion, quitting the school moments before the headmistress declares her expelled.

This biographical narrative tracks the upbringing of a strong adventuress, with enough quick looks into her flying exploits to elicit interest in reading more about her.

Beryl Clutterbuck is an adventurer. Her curiosity and need for something new is always getting the British blonde girl in trouble in 1912 British East Africa. When her only companion, a guard dog named Buller, is attacked by a leopard and dragged into the jungle, she makes a promise to herself and the dog, that she would find and rescue him. Enter Kibii, a Nandi Native boy that Beryl stumbles across during her mission. The two become great friends, but at one point, the fact that Beryl is a girl prevents her from hunting and becoming a warrior, a much worthy alternative compared to becoming a proper English lady. Her need for stimulation works to take her on her first lion hunt, bringing back the head of a lion for all her father's business acquaintances to see. After one more debacle, Captain Clutterbuck had had enough, and he sent her away from his rural farm to go to school at the nearest English School there was. She was to stay there for one year, and comes back to find my changes have come about. She is fourteen now, marrying age in the Nandi tradition, but she is still the only white girl in the tribe, and Kibii has become a warrior, set to protect the village. They will be friends again, but in the meantime, Beryl takes a job from her father as the head stable lad, lives in her own small house, and will fall in love with her little part of Africa all over again.
