aNaomi Novik's beloved Temeraire series, a brilliant combination of fantasy and history that reimagines the Napoleonic wars as fought with the aid of intelligent dragons, is a twenty-first-century classic. From the first volume, -- Praise for Naomi Novik and her Novels of Temeraire "Novik's influences run the gamut from Jane Austen to Patrick O'Brian, with a side trip through Anne McCaffrey. Her books are completely involving and probably addictive, their central conceit explored in clever detail with a great deal of wit and historical insight."--San Francisco Chronicle "These are beautifully written novels: not only fresh, original, and fast-paced, but full of wonderful characters with real heart."--Peter Jackson "A gripping adventure full of rich detail and the impossible wonder of gilded fantasy."--Entertainment Weekly "A new writer is soaring on the wings of a dragon."--The New York Times "A glorious series whose future status as a genre classic is now assured."--SF Reviews From the Hardcover edition.

I really liked this book and I was kept reading by wanting to know whether Laurance would get his memory back. When he did (spoiler) I was overjoyed and the rest of it was good ol' Temeraire series military action. I'm looking forwards to the next (last?) one in the series. :)

While I have loved the series, and this book has some very good parts, on the whole I found it disappointing. Characters that were previously important have just kind of disappeared, the flow was choppy, and I just couldn't get into it like I had with previous books.
Still worth a read if you're following the series but, personally, I'm hoping for a much better final work.

The first three books in this series were brilliant; after that, despite good patches, things went to hell in a handbasket. This particular book I tried to read twice. No sale.

A little disappointing to me because there were too many military tactics & not enough byplay between the characters.
