A fable, a political novel, a satire. Tweaks most every off-center political and social meme. Starts slow and gathers speed. I recommend reading at least one other McCarry novel before trying this one; The Miernik Dossier, for example.

The book has two morals. "The ends justify the means" is a dangerous belief; and, a belief in the inherent superiority of an aristocracy of any sort is equally dangerous. (You may not agree with this assessment; just my opinion.)

A note on the sex scenes: I recall two, one of which was satiric in intent. (If there were more, I wasn't paying attention, which says something about them.) If a couple of graphic scenes will put you off, don't read this book.

Taking back after reading 2 chapters. It's a huge book of 551 pages that could be only 300 pages if the minutia is removed. Boring...also Mr. McCarry relies too much on sex to fill his pages that tend to drone on and on.

Too bad, his plots and main character could be fascinating.
