A powerful and searingly honest memoir about a young woman who loses her family but finds herself in the process. In this astonishing debut, Claire Bidwell Smith, an only child, is just fourteen years old when both of her charismatic parents are diagnosed with cancer. What follows is a coming-of-age story that is both heartbreaking and exhilarating. As Claire hurtles towards loss she throws herself at anything she thinks might help her cope with the weight of this harsh reality: boys, alcohol, traveling, and the anonymity of cities like New York and Los Angeles. By the time she is twenty-five years old they are both gone and Claire is very much alone in the world. Claire's story is less of a tragic tale and more of a remarkable lesson on how to overcome some of life's greatest hardships. Written with suspense and style, and bursting with love and adventure, The Rules of Inheritance vividly captures the deep grief and surprising light of a young woman forging ahead on a journey of loss that humbled, strengthened, and ultimately healed her.

This author really loves the phrase LEAN IN... she used it so much that I actually became aware of and annoyed by it.

I discovered Claire Bidwell Smith and her writing when she guest posted on one of my favourite blogs www.kellehampton.com I was touched by her article about raising her small children without her mother and decided to check out her memoir, The Rules of Inheritance. Claire shares her journey of grief as she writes about her mother’s death when Claire was 19 and her father’s not long after. Her pain is palpable through the pages as she spirals without direction into an unhealthy relationship with both a troubled man and alcohol. Those who enjoyed Wild by Cheryl Strayed might like this one, and it would be a good choice for young people who have experienced a devastating loss to show that there is light at the end of the tunnel. The first book that was not chronologically ordered that I wasn't frustrated by.

Incredibly honest and raw about the stages of grief one can experience with the death of a close family member.

Recommended for all to help understand what one goes through with the death of a parent.
