The general premise of the book is fine and on many levels it's very entertaining, but the way the author dealt with love in the story is not appealing to me. I don't understand how someone can, on multiple occasions, sleep with someone and yet feel no guilt that that person is not the one they plan to marry. I'm not talking about how HR heroes visit brothels or whatever. This feeling is specifically for this story because honestly, it felt a bit like cheating. Just the principle of it was wrong. Like literally, it seemed that he would spend the night with Catherine and next morning would go propose to Frannie. That sounds so icky.

In addition, for all that Avendale did, I didn't like the way his case was handled, particularly the secrets kept from Winnie. I understand it was a difficult situation with very few legal solutions, but it still doesn't sit well with me. It was almost condescending in a way, this holier-than-thou attitude Catherine/Claybourn had where they felt no guilt by keeping Winnie out of the loop and thinking they knew better than the actual victim involved.

More emotional life in the "hero" than typical to romance novels. Catherine isn't particularly memorable but this story does set up a good series of books. Enjoyable and a bit bittersweet.
