I like Chomsky, but I think his ideas are best in the political realm instead of linguistics.

What Noam Chomsky has done for the field of linguistics is what Albert Einstien did for physics and science as a whole. The Chomsky Reader studies ones of Noams most accomplished theories of "universal language". It is a must read for anyone studying laguage/linguistics/politics/ or human theory.
