Magic-wielding Churchwitch and secret addict Chess Putnam knows better than anyone just how high a price people are willing to pay for a chemical rush. But when someone with money to burn and a penchant for black magic starts tampering with Downside's drug supply, Chess realizes that the unlucky customers are paying with their souls--and taking the innocent with them, as the magic-infused speed compels them to kill in the most gruesome ways possible. As if the streets weren't scary enough, the looming war between the two men in her life explodes, taking even more casualties and putting Chess squarely in the middle. Downside could become a literal ghost town if Chess doesn't find a way to stop both the war and the dark wave of death-magic, and the only way to do that is to use both her addiction and her power to enter the spell and chase the magic all the way back to its malevolent source. Too bad that doing so will probably kill Chess--if the war doesn't first destroy the man who's become her reason for living.

The character's lack of growth is frustrating. That said, I tear through all her books at warp speed because i can't put them down. A welcome addition to occult fiction which introduces a complete and self-consistant universe. Wouldn't want to live in most of it...but enjoy observing1

Great book and I certainly recommend to all Downside fans. As usual the last 70ish pages should be read during one sitting cause it's so...much...fun!

It was, however, my least favorite in the series. I think it’s probably because I’m somewhat tired of Chess’ constant “fu@# it” attitude. After 5 books I’m soooo ready for Chess to get her act together. At least a tiny bit ... please! The end of this book gives me hope for #6 but she was somewhat painful to be with sometimes in this book ... constant swearing. Hopefully the right amount of development has occurred and her “light bulb moment” towards the end means things will really change. She’ll always have issues of course but sometimes she’s just so pathetic! (i.e. When she messes up and did what she did I wanted to strangle her!)

There was a whole bunch more “street talk” in this book! In fact the only individual speaking normal English was Chess and briefly Elder Griffin (& partner). Hence the reading process didn’t flow quite so enjoyably. Don't expect to speedread through this one.

Although I’m ready for something different this is a really great, unique and exciting series that I will always continue to follow.
