"Lord Cazaril has been in turn, courtier, castle-warder, and captain; now he is but a crippled ex-galley slave seeking nothing more than a menial job in the kitchens of the Dowager Provincara, the noble patroness of his youth. But Cazaril finds himself promoted to the exalted and dangerous position of tutor to Iselle, the beautiful, fiery sister of the heir to Chalion's throne. Cazaril is forced to confront not only the powerful enemies, but also the malignant curse that clings to the royal household, trapping him, flesh and soul in a maze of demonic paradox, damnation, and death for as long as he dares walk the five-fold pathway of the gods."

Great Cazaril voice

A delight. A fantasy world crafted with such care that it feels alive, especially considering its depiction of the world religion and how it builds and tangles with the plot. It is a thoughtful text, where the protagonists are much more likely to pause and think through their actions and write a few decisive letters and then ride off at midnight to deliver said letters than push through with swords and arrows a-flyin' (though it has terrific action, too). The language used is high and gorgeous, practically poetic at times. The audiobook is a masterpiece in its own right, well read with a huge vocal range and impressive awareness. Basically, fantastic, with a great cast and fascinating intrigue.
