I always hesitate to start a cozy mystery series because some are sickeningly sweet and so "cute" I can't read more than a few pages. A Crafty Killing was a wonderful surprise. I read over 100 pages in the first sitting, and loved every page. Not saccharine sweet, but full of sweet people (and of course some who are not only not sweet but clearly capable of murder). Were there two murders or four? Is it one killer or several? Will Katie quit her job and save the business her husband destroyed their marriage to buy into? And which of those hunky guys with smoldering good looks is a potential friend, and which is really her enemy. This book was FUN. Under all her names, Lorna Barrett, Lorraine Bartlett and L.L. Bartlett, this author creates the very best of the cozy mystery genre.
That aside, the basis for this series seems to be stolen from Earlene Fowler's _Fool's Puzzle_ from 1994. An artist community managed by a recent widow (whose husband died in a car crash) is the scene of a couple murders and the cranky Sheriff doesn't want the spunk gal involved in solving the case. One needs ask: Homage or plagiarism?

This is the first in the Victoria Square series and is a well-crafted mystery with delightful characters in a cozy setting. The writing was solid and the pace steady. Enjoyed it very much and will definitely continue the series.

A simple American cosy, and a happy example of that genre. Will read more by this author
