this is an engaging writer, indeed. the russian people, as portrayed by him here, are desperate and funny and resigned to their fate. they seem less trapped in their cultural delusions, except if you want to consider vodka such a trap. the chechens appear as ominous as Sicilians. The Germans are very clean. Rather than writing characters composed of racial stereotypes alone, Smith endows each one with vibrant individuality. their is a climactic ending---oh, jolly good! the 'red square' could just as appropriately be affixed to the McGuffin ( see Hitchcock ) , a painting the main characters compete for, in a deadly fashion. " Headlights swung on and off the road, creating an ad hoc junction. Perhaps it wasn't so much a matter of there being no crime in Germany as it was how crime was defined. In Moscow prostitution was against the law. Here it was a regulated trade." " We grew up with informers. Among our friends and families there were always informers. Even among heroes there were informers." " Laika kept her attention on Arcady in case he produced a bomb, a gun or a sharpened umbrella, against her master." "Irina wore an emerald outfit that accented the red in her hair. She was so nervous and excited that in the lift she was like an extra light." "In Russian the word for beautiful was the same as the word for red." "Malevich's problem was that Stalin decreed that writers and artists should be 'engineers of the soul.'" "Most of the Malevich paintings were suppressed in Russia for 50 years, as 'ideologically incorrect' art." " Irina pointed out that Russians always used German art materials when they could."

A beautifully written novel with many layers of mysteries concluding with the Coup in Red Square.
I couldn't put it down!
