Despite praise from notable critics I found this tome did not meet expectations. One event early on happens to hook my interest in eco-extremists vs. evil capitalists in a battle to save the last pristine environment on Earth. Then the book bumbles into a travel log, lament over a failed romance and hints of a hopeful one. There are interesting geological and historical facts along the way and some excellent descriptions, but Robinson goes over the top to display his knowledge of art, music, German and finances. For example, he refers to famous painters that would not conjure up a picture in most people's minds, "die Goetterdamerung", a German opera, numerous times and laments that the stock market is doing so well (actually better than he states). In honesty I could not drag my eyes past page 150 and did not care at all about the characters or the outcome. Read this is you like exotic scenery, a little science and history, slow romance and I assume a win for ecology.

This book was a terrific read.

It's a course on Antarctica - history, natural history, current affairs, the whole gamut of information about the driest continent.

It's a can't-put-it-down thriller and is laced with a sprinkling of SF.

As is always the case with Robinson, you come away having learned buckets, thoroughly entertained, and wanting more.

A great book by a great writer!

Great read....I think Kim Stanley Robinson is one of the few writers who could have pulled this off.
