I read "Desperation" years ago and I have said for a long time it was my favorite Stephen King book. I may need to go ahead and re read it... The regulators was good, but it was off the wall crazy insane, just a little far out there for my tastes. I just read the shining which is based a little bit more in reality. Not that there's anything wrong with fantasy, but I mean It was super gory and just heart pounding all the way through. There wasn't anything symbolic or satirical about it, it was just a fun , shallow, deadly romp all the way through. Was it good? Yes, but not in the same way "It" or "The Stand" is good.

The quality of the writing of most best-selling authors decreases proportionately with the size of their name on the cover of their books. We have all eagerly purchased the latest work by a famous author only to be disappointed by huge margins and widely spaced lines of type, as the publisher tries to hide what is obviously a “grind-it-out by the deadline” effort. Until now, Stephen King (Bachman) has resisted this temptation, but The Regulators is far below his usual standard. Normally I have trouble putting a Stephen King novel down, even into the wee hours of the morning. With The Regulators I actually gave up on it several times and then fell asleep just a few pages from the end of the book! The plot drags, the characters are paper thin and even the famous Stephen King “blood and gore” more rightly belongs in a cheap video game than in a novel by the master of the genre. I sincerely hope this is just a case of “you can’t win them all,” as opposed to a new approach to writing.
