To be honest, I got this thin book thinking it was Nordic Noir, but it has stayed with me as something a bit more durable. Do not be fooled by a few childish thoughts on the part of the narrator, whose mind we inhabit and occasionally hold in contempt when she seems to be somewhat simple; she is not. And this is more the story of a woman in midlife, with regrets, desires, imperfections and cunning whose husband has died, than a murder mystery, though murder there certainly is…

The writing could be described as jerky, perhaps it’s the translation, but I prefer to think that it simply leaves out some swathes of activity to keep us on our toes. I had to go back and re-read some barely mentioned details to fill in the blanks – they’re there, but this is not a lazy summer beach read; it’s an interesting portrait of a complex Danish woman who is treading carefully into a new chapter in her life.

An interesting character study of the rather surly protagonist, but a page-turning mystery this is not.
