Jack learns that his father is in a coma after a car accident in Florida. They've been on the outs, but this is his dad, so he heads south. In the hospital, he meets Anya, one of his father's neighbors. She's a weird old duck who seems to know an awful lot about his father, and even a lot about Jack. Anya takes Jack back to Dad's senior community, which borders on the Everglades. Jack's arrival does not go unnoticed. A young woman named Semelee, who has strange talents and lives in an isolated area of the Everglades with a group of misshapen men, feels his presence. Who is Anya? Who is Semelee, and what is her connection to the recent strange deaths of community residents? And what are the strange lights Jack keeps hearing about? Lights that emanate from a sinkhole deep in the Everglades--lights from another place, another reality.

I picked this book up because the author is included in a list of action/ thriller writers. I also wanted to jump into a new series about the same character. Sorry, but I did not like it. The plotting was good, and I liked many of the technical details about overnight shipping outside Fed Ex channels (!), and I also liked the Florida Everglades local color, but I'm not a fan of supernatural influences. They take away from the plotting, which is strong enough to stand on its own, and they completely destroy any human character development. I noticed that F. Paul Wilson has written several different series, so maybe I will try a different one to see if it is free of outside influences !

I liked it a lot. I liked how Wilson slowly is pulling all the different sub-plots together. I don't know what the end result will be but it's fun to see him add links between previously unrelated characters and events. Fun read, lots of action, and we get to learn a bit more about "Jack"
