This is a great story. The descriptions are so on that you felt you were in the cold desolate part of Alaska where these people went to live to get away from the horrors and fears of the father.
This is a story of a man suffering from PTSD, before it was identified and the pain he suffered and unfortunately inflicted on others. Their life in Alaska was far from ideal in many ways, but Leni adapted and grew stronger. This book was as good as "Nightengale" and well worth the wait. I have long read her books and have never been disappointed by any of them. Great storyteller.

I was only able to get half way with this book and finally gave up!

I love her books and have waited in anticipation of another good read, but by page 160 of this book I am very tired of hearing how much Cora loves her husband even though he is a violent person. I will continue to read this story and hope that the storyline changes. I tried to finish the book but by page 236 I couldn't read anymore. It was repetitive and sad. I will wait for the movie.

The Nightingale and The Great Alone are both being made into movies by Tristar/Sony
pictures. Hannah consulting. Nightingale will be released January 2019.

If I could give a higher rating I would. Kristin Hannah did it again. I began The Great Alone, Saturday evening, read it straight through until the early hours of Sunday. Great descriptive characters and story, brought Alaska and the travails of the family to life. Found myself holding my breathe a number of times, wondering what would happen next.

This was a really good read. Kristin Hannah can be relied on to tell a great story about family struggles. I thought the characters were well done and the descriptions of life in Alaska were beautiful to read. . This will be an easy book to recommend for 2018.
