A wonderful film made the way films used to be made.

KCLS patrons have spoken!! From your patron reviews I find that I am in total agreement with the majority of you. "Frantz" is an excellent film. It is especially appealing in Black and White, which fits the movie perfectly. The camera captures the feelings of the characters. The script is not predictable as so many are. The acting is warm and subdued. Everything seems so real and captures one imagination easily. The time watching this movie is magical!

Extremely moving film, both sad and sublime. It's a tribute to the humanity found in compassion and forgiving as a path then to hope and life. Paula Beer is fantastic in her role and the music binds their lives through its sorrow and beauty.

I find I'm in agreement with all the other reviews, this is a superb film able to go beyond the typical one-sided views often portrayed. I'm a prime example of the bias/prejudice harbored against Germany for many years. This depiction gave me insight into the nature of pride one feels for a particular 'side'. All sides, factions, suffer in war & this is a wonderful demonstration of the facts. We are all capable of taking pride of country way too far, to the exclusion of sound judgement & compassion.

My first error was clicking to watch the bonus selection...major mistake on this film. On this one the bonus best comes last or after the film. I definitely needed the subtitles & could even have watched this without any sound. The actors expressions were great.

Great work! I watched it twice and will watch again later. It is very beautiful and keeps you feeling for the heroes, but what I liked most of all was its pacifism. Especially important nowadays! Highly recommended to everyone.

An outstanding film. The story steadily builds up, then tears apart the background which brings the main characters together. Along the way are glimpses of war's horrors and some of the nationalistic attitudes that create long-lasting resentments among both the winners, and the losers. But also, shared grief leads to unlikely friendships. A wonderful, original story, and a brilliant piece of filmmaking. Subtitled.

Anna is grieving the loss of her fiance, Frantz, who died during WWI, when she discovers a Frenchman placing flowers on Frantz's grave. Anna and Frantz's parents take Adrien into their home under the impression that he was a friend to Frantz - this helps brighten their home and their lives, but Adrien is not all he seems. He eventually tells Anna his secret just before going back to France. After a period of time passes, Anna travels to France to find Adrien, and discovers another heartbreaking secret. If you're hoping for a happy ending, don't. But that's not to say that the ending is not beautiful. The way the movie was shot is also amazing - it is mostly black and white, but in moments when Anna feels almost as though Frantz is alive again, or is just very happy, it changes to color for a few short minutes. I thought it was also pretty awesome how the languages switched from German to French and back again so smoothly - the blending of the two worlds and the characters was wonderful. While Germans were not accepting of the French and the French were not accepting of the Germans, Anna and Adrien were able to meet other on their turf by using both languages and able to fully understand where the other was coming from. This is a movie that will stick with me for a little while.
