An outstanding film. The story steadily builds up, then tears apart the background which brings the main characters together. Along the way are glimpses of war's horrors and some of the nationalistic attitudes that create long-lasting resentments among both the winners, and the losers. But also, shared grief leads to unlikely friendships. A wonderful, original story, and a brilliant piece of filmmaking. Subtitled.

Anna is grieving the loss of her fiance, Frantz, who died during WWI, when she discovers a Frenchman placing flowers on Frantz's grave. Anna and Frantz's parents take Adrien into their home under the impression that he was a friend to Frantz - this helps brighten their home and their lives, but Adrien is not all he seems. He eventually tells Anna his secret just before going back to France. After a period of time passes, Anna travels to France to find Adrien, and discovers another heartbreaking secret. If you're hoping for a happy ending, don't. But that's not to say that the ending is not beautiful. The way the movie was shot is also amazing - it is mostly black and white, but in moments when Anna feels almost as though Frantz is alive again, or is just very happy, it changes to color for a few short minutes. I thought it was also pretty awesome how the languages switched from German to French and back again so smoothly - the blending of the two worlds and the characters was wonderful. While Germans were not accepting of the French and the French were not accepting of the Germans, Anna and Adrien were able to meet other on their turf by using both languages and able to fully understand where the other was coming from. This is a movie that will stick with me for a little while.

An interesting and thought-provoking film - anti-war, anti-nationalism - set after World War I, with messages for to-day. It was made with a fine touch.

A beautiful, thought-provoking, and compassionate film with top-notch acting! Post WWI, but with a message that is both timeless and contemporary. This is NOT an action film. We loved the scene when the doctor asks his friends WHO sent their sons to war and made the weapons that killed them (he and his friends, of course). And in the same scene he says, "When thousands of other men's sons were killed, we called it victory and celebrated with beer. When thousands of our sons were killed, they called it victory and celebrated with wine. We are fathers who drink to the deaths of our sons."

I was really of two minds about this film. The sensitive young Frenchman wanted forgiveness but at what cost? Really made for an excellent film.

A delicate story of grief, guilt, love and forgiveness. Just beautiful with an amazing cinematography.
