A touching and evocative story set in Britain on the eve of World War I. The spirited and intelligent lead character, Pearl Gibson, is relatable and believable. The story moves quickly with lush detail and feeling as it addresses issues around family secrets, social class, and love. The book is a well written, quick, and satisfying read.
