I like this movie it was well acted. Good directing good script. Although it did make very angry at times. Everytime A decent man try to do something good for the betterment of the race. There always seems to some dumb animals messing everything up.

Well acted. A little disappointed in some of the obvious political slants that were not prevalent in the day. So it was not really a believable story line. Many times they embellish to make a better story.

Written and directed by Gary Ross, this is a 2016 American historical docudrama inspired by the life of Newton Knight and his armed revolt against the Confederacy in Jones County, Mississippi, throughout the American Civil War.
Although the plot of the movie turns out fictious, the overall story follows the history of Jones County, and many of the events portrayed are true.
Newton and Rachel (a black woman) have a son, Jason.
Since they could not legally marry, Newton arranges to deed a parcel of land to her.
The story is interspersed with the story of Newton's great-grandson, Davis Knight, who is arrested under Mississippi's miscegenation laws in 1948.
Since he is possibly of one-eighth black descent, under Mississippi law at that time he is considered black.
Therefore he could not legally marry his long-time sweetheart.
Although sentenced to five years in prison, his conviction is thrown out by the Mississippi Supreme Court in 1949, rather than risk the law being declared unconstitutional.
It is an enlightening and entertaining docudrama.

Excellent historically accurate movie showing a part of the history of the Civil War that has been largely hidden and under reported. I highly recommend this well acted movie to anyone interested in the history of the Civil War, especially how this played out in Mississippi. This movie opened up our eyes for the little known event. I wish people in the south had open- mind to accept and understand all different aspects of the CW like this one.

I chose this with some trepidation, as MMc is not on my list of favorites - that said he delivered. I knew there were many in the South that wanted no part of the war yet were forced into it for survival, much the same as in Germany & a slew of other countries/conflicts. Love the acting & delivery of Ali M. This did prompt me to look to historical background of the CW, a part of AmHistory I rarely chose. It brought out my inner violence & rage, envisioning all the awful, gruesome torture I might do to evil beings like the so called home guard of the South. There's all kinds of hate.

Good movie about little known historic events...well acted, well written - well worth the watch for sure. TIP: Watch the movie...then Google -Newt Knight's name... truth is stranger than fiction.

All the compliments for this movie are well deserved. When you give McConaughey a very good script he definitely delivers. Watching Free State of Jones you get a solid depiction of unfortunate Mississippi history after the Civil War. If you're into the Civil War history this is the movie for you. Great movie on its own too.

A very decent biopic. I never used to like the drawling McConaughey, but he has grown on me.

Enjoyed the movie. Good storyline, fine acting, with enough action to hold interest throughout. I liked it.

It started off very fast paced (although gruesome battle scenes) but was boring for the last hour or more. Good job by the actors and it's an interesting story that I had never heard told before, but I think it could have been shorted by at least a half hour. The story telling was kind of choppy and not smoothly told.

The most important quotes are in IMDb as these few:

Will Sumrall: [referring to Daniel] He died with honor.
Newton Knight: No, Will, he just died.
===
Number one, no man ought to stay poor so another man can get rich. Number two, no man ought to tell another man what you got to live for or what he's got to die for. Number three, what you put in the ground is yours to tend and harvest and there ain't no man ought to be able to take that away from you. Number four, every man is a man. If you walk on two legs, you're a man. It's as simple as that.
===
Moses: Deserted. How come?
Newton Knight: It ain't my fight, you know? Don't own no slaves. Ain't gonna die so they can get rich selling cotton.
Moses: That's why we left, too.
