This is indeed a very good movie, but the best WWII submarine movie is The Enemy Below, with Robert Mitchum. Fair warning, the submarine is German!

Filmed almost entirely within the claustrophobic spaces of a submarine using highly innovative (for the time) underwater effects and authentic set pieces, this is one of the better B&W wartime dramas to surface in the 50’s. Despite being too old for their roles, Gable and Lancaster share an onscreen chemistry, perhaps fuelled by their purported offscreen animosity, which maintains a dramatic tension and hones the performances of an impressive supporting cast including a very young Don Rickles making his film debut. The full screen battle sequences are convincing enough and the constricted onboard cinematography is a marvel of cramped spaces and narrow corridors with the ever-present mechanical pings and clicks heightening the suspense. Somewhat reminiscent of Melville’s "Moby Dick", with Gable’s Ahab single-mindedly pursuing his ironclad whale no matter what the cost.

A movie about actual real heros ..when men were men...probably time for a sequel...Boy George in Gable's part...Elton John in Lancaster's part..would make for great comedy...Ryan Seacrest as Mueller. Jimmy Fallon in Don Rickles part. Seth Myers as the guy who almost drowns dumping the garbage.

Entertaining war movie. Nice to see Clark Gable act off of Burt Lancaster, good mesh of styles. The story plays out well due to the direction of Robert Wise. Spoiler Alert: The real objective, motive and enemy are not revealed until necessary.

For my money, this is the best of the World War II submarine movies! Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster head an all star cast. I love Don Rickles as a smart mouth sailor. If you like suspense, then "Run Silent, Run Deep" is for you. Behind all great movie is a great story. Captain Edward L. Beach certainly fulfilled his mission with a story that is gripping from start to finish. I hate to leave out Kudo's for the director Robert WIse, who captures so much underwater fighting with the submarines. One of the finest movies on World War II that you will ever be fortunate enough to see!

This is a 1958 war film directed by Robert Wise, based on the novel by Captain Edward L. Beach of the same name.
It is about World War II submarine warfare in the Pacific Ocean, dealing with themes of vengeance, endurance, courage, loyalty and honor, and how these can be tested during time of war.
It is a gripping and action-packed drama with an edge-of-your-seat thrill.

A good war movie with some well known ace actors.
