There exists this misconception that manga is a simple formula of "big eyes + small features = manga". There is a similar misconception about steampunk, namely that one merely has to put gears, goggles, and a corset into a blender, and voila! - steampunk!

Sadly, this book falls prey to BOTH misconceptions.

None of these illustrations are true manga (and frankly, a lot of them aren't even very good drawings), and the artist's idea of "steampunk" consists of slapping a lot of cogs, gears, and bolts onto what is otherwise a genre-ambiguous figure in a generic outfit. (Literally - the last step of every drawing is adding random hardware to the drawings.)

The only things that keep me from considering this a total waste of time is 1) doing ANY drawing exercises will improve your skills, 2) the sheer volume of drawings to replicate, and 3) the artist/author created little backstories for each character, which was a nice touch. I gave the book a star for each of these criteria, which given the fact that it doesn't deliver on EITHER of its titular premises, I consider to be extremely generous.

In other words, it can be worth flipping through and even drawing from, but don't borrow it because you're hoping specifically for steampunk manga. Just consider it a regular drawing book.

I absolutely love the concept of steampunk, although rough and morbid , this is a completely imaginative realm of usefull gadgets that you have to expand your imagination to comprehend or desighn!
