This is a very entertaining movie that is dripping with sarcastic, socio-comedic commentary on some of the customs of Sicilians a half-century ago - specifically, the film addresses seduction, marriage, and family honor. It's extremely well acted and cast. It's a comedy, with an acerbic view of certain Sicilian customs. It has a very brief sound track - just a few songs - but they are wonderful! Highly recommended!

Savagely sarcastic satire, in which the casting itself signifies the director's intent. It also adds to a bit of incoherence, as it's very much made with "opera buffa" characters and plot line, partially with Neo-realist technique, and studded with Goya-esque visions. Regardless, there is real social commentary about the helplessness of women in this Italian society, and the clown masks keep slipping. This becomes a problem with the "chief clown", Saro Urzi, whose farcical character is so overblown, that it's difficult to empathize with his victimhood at the end of the film. This is not an issue with the extraordinary Stefania Sandrelli however, whose anguish and beauty gives the film its moral center. For the most part, Bravo!

Small minded people driven by familial honor, this show is a mix of humor, sweat, tragedy and personal determination. With the fabulous Stefania Sandrelli, as the titular waif being dragged through events out of her control. Set in Sicily, B&W

Not really one of the best on this topic, but sincerely a great picture to see!
Director's great taste here seems to over draw a little bit the line and the acting is in urge to please an exagerated point of view on - the here supposed to be from the northern eye - italian life in the south, stressed to extreme and romanticized, than probably it really was. In an Italy where to kill your wife, if suspected to cheat on you, would have made you punishable of something like only four ears in jail, this movie seems soft.
I personally just loved the art direction, or production design, to say it in an american way: the walls, houses, streets, clothings and hair, make up and even the graphic direction of gazes by the apparently casual casting. Every thing was really professionally made and super. Even over designed to look "southern", but with skilled expertize.
By the same author I suggest the view of : "Indagine su un cittadino al di sopra di ogni sospetto". A masterpiece.
