I really enjoyed the movie. I do wish color had come to the movies early enough to see all of the beautiful clothes worn in this film.

By far the best film version of Orczy's classic tale of death-defying adventure during the Reign of Terror after the French Revolution.
Leslie Howard is fantastic as Sir Percy Blakeney, a fop (a vain man who only cares about clothing and manners) who spends his days advising the king on the proper lace to wear and writing bad poetry. What his friends could never imagine is that his behavior is a cover for his secret identity as the Scarlet Pimpernel, an enemy of the French who rescues innocent aristocrats from execution by guillotine.
Raymond Massey plays opposite him as the creepy Chauvelin who is determined to unmask and arrest the Pimpernel. The two share several outstanding scenes that showcase Howard's ability to move between the two sides of his character. For an added bonus Merle Oberon plays Sir Percy's wife, whose past involvement in the Reign of Terror has driven a wedge between them.
A great pick for anyone who loves an old-fashioned adventure with great dialogue.

This movie is far and away one of my favorites! (I've watched it many times.) It's a wonderful adventure tale and in my opinion is for the whole family. Don't be put off by the b&w format.
