Denise Minger is kind of like a "Sam Walton" in the world of nutrition "educators."
.
Both are smart, ambitious and hard working.
.
But so are tons of other people -- those factors alone however do not explain their, "success." But rather it is due to the fact that each just happened to step into an opportunity that was primed and ready to explode. Sam Walton correctly saw that booming Chinese manufacturing, needed a conduit to bring its cheep goods to US markets, and he stepped into that energetic stream.
.
Likewise, Denise Minger saw an opportunity to rise to fame by defending a wasteful, polluting, violent, water-sucking, GHG emitting, animal protein industry from discredit, by cleverly mis-applying statistics and was instantly popular amongst those seeking to discredit the voluminous science showing benefits from eschewing animal foods. I'd suggest that you read these BEFORE you read anything from Minger:

Nicely written with a good deal of solid information on how we rate foods and how unscientific the approach is.

An easy-to read recap of the politics of the Food Pyramid creation in the United States since the early 1900's. There was nothing in it I hadn't read before - in other books - but Minger is a good writer, and is easily able to slice through much of the politics surrounding this.

Recommended for those who enjoy her blog, or for those who haven't read anything on this topic before.

Warning: Shock and outrage will grip you as you dive into this one-of-a-kind expose. Shoddy science, sketchy politics and shady special interests have shaped American Dietary recommendations and destroyed our nation's health over recent decades.

The phrase Death by Food Pyramid isn't shock-value sensationalism, but the tragic consequence of simply doing what we have been told to do by our own government and giant food profiteers in pursuit of health.

In Death by Food Pyramid, Denise Minger exposes the forces that overrode common sense and solid science to launch a pyramid phenomenon that bled far beyond US borders to taint the eating habits of the entire developed world. Denise explores how generations of flawed pyramids and plates endure as part of the national consciousness, and how the one size fits all diet mentality these icons convey pushes us deeper into the throes of obesity and disease.

Regardless of whether you're an omnivore or vegan, research junkie or science-phobe, health novice or seasoned dieter, Death by Food Pyramid will reframe your understanding of nutrition science, and inspire you to take your health, and future, into your own hands.
